DUTTON'S BROADSIDE
To celebrate the opening of Dutton's Beverly Hills Books, an independent bookstore, the owner asked me to design a broadside around a quotation by Thomas Carlyle. I painted an open book, and placed the text on the page to
feel as if it was magically rising from the book.
RANCH WEDDING
In designing an invitation for a wedding to take place at the Bride's family ranch, I incorporated a 1920s image from a citrus packing label of the view from the ranch. The image is tipped on by hand, and the bride chose her favorite color, lime green, for the letterpressed text.
BAUHAUS
BAR MITZVAH
In celebration of her son Adam's bar mitzvah, my client wanted a design that would be fun and bold. I took inspiration from Bauhaus design, and then created a "ball game," the theme of which carried through from the invitation itself to the RSVP card and envelopes.
RANCH & STARS WEDDING
In designing the invitation for the wedding which was to take place at the bride's family Avacado and Citrus Ranch, the couple, both writers and naturalists, wanted to incorporate nature and literature into the invitation's theme. A favorite Wallace Stegner quotation was chosen, and the invitation became a little book, a journey through leaves, birds, stars and ranch. Printed in different color inks on handmade Nepal Lokta paper, the result is a sophisticated design look that is still of the earth.
AVA ANNOUNCEMENT
In designing an announcement for the birth of a new baby, I wanted to create a fluid design which would move easily between image and text. I used dingbats from my collection of letterpress cuts from the turn of the century and hand-set the type. The cards are printed in a Chinese red color for good luck and to celebrate the baby's half-Chinese heritage.
PUBLICATION CELEBRATION
This card was designed to celebrate the publication of I WAS THERE. Incorporated into the design of the card are elements from the book's design, including the red sun and the painted horizon line.
